Investment Thesis
Vinyl Capital invests at seed in commerce and enterprise software, on the thesis that operators who have built and scaled e-commerce businesses evaluate commerce infrastructure better than generalist investors. It backs companies in retail technology, fintech, marketing infrastructure and vertical software, typically as an early institutional cheque.
Manager's Experience
Founded in 2021 by TJ Mahony with a $40M seed fund in Boston, focused exclusively on commerce infrastructure. Mahony co-founded FlipKey, acquired by TripAdvisor in 2012, and Compete.com, acquired by WPP, then spent 2017 to 2021 as a partner at Accomplice running its Boston Syndicate angel programme; earlier at Highland Capital Partners and Accenture. General Partner Travis Kirk Lowry writes $1M+ cheques at the earliest stages. The firm is explicit about backing companies "pre-revenue, pre-product, often pre-DBA," writing $250K–$3M with a $1.5M sweet spot for 10–20% ownership, typically without taking board seats. SEC-registered, CRD 315640.
